Systematic selection of the optimal refrigeration cycle for the design of global energy plants.

Author(s) : BRUNO J. C., CASTELLS F.

Summary

A method for the selection of the best refrigeration cycle is proposed, given a combined heat and power plant (CHP) and the characteristics of a refrigeration load. The CHP plant and the refrigeration system constitute what is called the global energy plant. This plant is optimized using a mathematical programming approach based on sequential linear programming. All the commercially available absorption cycles are modelled, namely, single and double effect (isoflow and paraflow) water/lithium bromide, and single and double stage ammonia/water chillers and also a simplified compression chiller. Two examples of typical applications are included to illustrate the method.
