Summary
Building energy consumption accounts for about one third of the total energy consumption, of which heating energy consumption accounts for a relatively large proportion. Room air conditioner (RAC) is one of the most widely used heating methods in the world. However, RAC suffers from the low coefficient of performance (COP) during the partial load conditions which occur frequently in real operation, especially when the partial load ratio (PLR) is very low. In this study, the interconnected air conditioner (IAC) is proposed to improve the system performance under low PLR conditions. Three-fluid heat exchangers are used in the indoor units of RACs and all the indoor units are connected with a water loop. When the PLR is low, the compressor of some RACs will stop and the required heat will be supplied by other RACs. The mathematical model is built to calculate the system performance in heating season. An office in Shanghai is used to analyze the heating performance of IAC system, and the performance of the IAC system is compared with conventional RACs. The results show that: (1) In four cases under different PLR conditions, the energy savings of the IAC system are 20.3%, 17.2%, 14.4% and 3.2%, respectively; (2) During the heating season, the IAC system achieves 11.8% energy savings and 13.3% performance improvement compared to conventional RACs.
