A NEW ICE STORAGE SYSTEM CALLED < ICE BANKS > CONSISTING OF 1,800 TO 3,000 L TANKS IN PARALLEL, FILLED WITH WATER AND EQUIPPED WITH HEAT EXCHANGERS WITH POLYETHYLENE TUBES AND CONNECTED THROUGH A WATER-GLYCOL CIRCUIT TO A CONVENTIONAL WATER COOLER, IS DESCRIBED. THE OPERATING MODE OF THE ICE BANKS IS DESCRIBED AND THE CHARACTERISTICSOF THE CALMAC DESIGN ARE PRESENTED. AN EXAMPLE OF USE OF THE SYSTEM IN AIR CONDITIONING AND REFRIGERATION PLANT IS GIVEN, INTENDED TO MEET PEAK LOADS AND, IN HEAT PUMPS, FOR HEAT RECOVERY. SOME ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS ARE GIVEN IN CONCLUSION. R.R.
