A numerical analysis of a reciprocating active magnetic regenerator with a parallel-plate regenerator geometry.

Summary
The authors have developed a two-dimensional model of a reciprocating Active Magnetic Regenerator (AMR) with a regenerator made of parallel plates arranged in a stack configuration. The time-dependent, two-dimensional model solves the Navier-Stokes equations for the heat transfer fluid and the coupled heat transfer equations for the regenerator and the fluid. The model is implemented using the Finite Element Method. The model can be used to study both transient and steady-state phenomena in the AMR for any ratio of regenerator to fluid heat capacity. Results on the AMR performance for different design choices and operating parameters are presented and the implications for optimal AMR operation are discussed.
