A numerical model for a dehumidifier wood drying kiln.

Summary

The potential for dehumidifier driers to reduce the energy used in drying processes is not fully realised, due primarily to insufficient understanding of good design and operating practice. To address these issues a model has been developed for drying Pinus radiata, as part of a dehumidifier kiln model, including the dehumidifier, the fans and the kiln envelope. The paper describes the modelling methods and compares simulation results with measurements. Changes in the fan efficiency and in the kiln heat loss are shown to have a significant impact on the drying speed and on the efficiency of the system.
