A review of the international refrigerated transport market.

Author(s) : WILD G. P., DEARING J. B.

Summary

The report notes the cyclical nature of the sea transport market and the influence of season and climate. The recent downturn is compared with the spectacular growth over the previous five years. Excess supply rather than depressed demand is the major contributor to inadequate freight rates. There are now welcome signs that the scrapping of older vessels is reaching a more satisfactory level, and recent data relating to this is analysed, together with data on second-hand transactions. The effects of the European Union banana regime on western markets are considered, together with new market opportunities in Eastern Europe and Japan.
