Summary

ISLETS OF LANGERHANS ISOLATED FROM PORCINE PANCREAS WERE EXPOSED TO DMSO AT 273 K (0 DEG C) AND FROZEN IN LIQUID NITROGEN. AFTER REWARMING THE DMSO WAS REMOVED FROM THE ISLETS USING A PROTOCOL OF SERIAL DILUTIONS OF SUCROSE TO MAINTAIN OSMOTIC STABILITY, OR A LARGE VOLUME OF UNMODIFIED BASAL MEDIUM EAGLES CULTURE MEDIUM. THE CONSEQUENCES ON BOTH ENDOCRINE AND EXOCRINE CELLS WERE EXAMINED BY SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY.
