DESCRIBES A NEW, SIMPLIFIED METHOD TO QUANTIFY THE POLLUTION LOAD IN BUILDINGS CAUSED BY MATERIALS, OCCUPANTS AND TOBACCO SMOKE. THE METHOD INVOLVES MEASUREMENTS OF THE PERCEIVED AIR QUALITY IN DECIPOL, OF THE OUTDOOR AIR SUPPLY TO THE BUILDING AND OF CO2 AND CO. THE METHOD WAS USED IN A STUDY OF 9 OFFICE BUILDINGS. THE AVERAGE POLLUTION LOAD FROM MATERIALS AND VENTILATION SYSTEM OF 0.23 OLF/M2 FLOOR, THE OCCUPANTS CONTRIBUTED 0.05 OLF/M2 FLOOR, AND TOBACCO SMOKE CONTRIBUTED 0.09 OLF/M2 FLOOR. THE AVERAGE VENTILATION RATE WAS 25 L/S PER OCCUPANT BUT ONLY 3 L/S PER OLF.
