Summary

A simulation model has been developed to predict the thermodynamic performance of scroll compressors. A single-degree-of-freedom model is used to describe the discharge reed valve dynamics and mathematical expressions are written to accurately evaluate both the volume of the compression chamber and the available valve port area during the discharge process. Gas leakage and heat transfer in the gas pockets are important aspects of the compressor modeling. The model reported herein adopts new correlations for such phenomena obtained from dimensional analysis and numerical simulations. Predictions of mass flow rate and discharge temperature for different operating conditions are compared with measurements and good agreement is found.
