A single stage reverse Brayton cryocooler: performance and endurance tests on the engineering model.

Summary

A single stage reverse Brayton cycle cryocooler is being developed for applications in space that require high performance, low vibration and reliability. The cooler is designed for a refrigeration load of 5 watts at 65 K. The cooler uses miniature turbomachines with self-acting gas bearings to achieve long life without wear or vibration. An engineering model version of the cryocooler has been fabricated and is being tested at the US Air Force Phillips Laboratory. As of the end of April 1996, the cooler has accumulated a total of approximately 9400 hours of operation. Approximately 6150 hours of this total have been in endurance testing at steady conditions.
