A study of some next generation candidates for cascade refrigeration cycles.

Summary
Cascade cycles are often the technology of choice to achieve safe and economical operating costs for very low temperature conditions in the refrigeration industry. Some of the incumbent refrigerants used in these systems are starting to become unsustainable due to environmental concerns and legislation. CO2/Ammonia or CO2/N2O systems are often considered viable alternatives for the replacements of the typical fluids. In this work we look at some next generation fluorine based candidates and their performance in two-stage industrial cascade cycles. We compare some of these systems to the CO2/Ammonia system’s performance from a Thermodynamic point of view. The works also examines the use of blends as well as pure fluids as alternative next generation fluids for two-stage industrial cascade cycles. The primary advantage of using next-generation fluids is that the pressures in the system are significantly lower, thereby reducing the engineering demands for constructing such systems. This is achieved without incurring a cost in energy efficiency.
