Summary

The authors examined the optimum relationships between a pipe radius and a pipe embedded pitch in horizontal earth coil heat exchangers in consideration of the energy consumption to circulate the thermal medium liquid. The optimum values of pipe radius/pitch are 12-18 for the continuous piping style and 6-10 for the trench piping style. Computer simulations for a single house shows that the shallow earth has the sufficient capacity as a heat source for heat pump.
