Summary
This article provides a technical description and gives the history of a rare "Grasso VSA 4x130" cast-iron compressor using ammonia that was employed in a Dutch flake-ice manufacturing plant from 1947 until 1967. Today, this compressor fulfils a decorative role, as does a water-cooled "Prestcold Y5" compressor manufactured in 1921 and used in a hospital over a 69-year period.
