Abscissic acid and turgidity recovery of chilled bean plantlets.

[In Italian. / En italien.]

Type of article: Periodical article

Summary

The influence on biosynthesis of abscisic acid of low temperatures as related to water stress and turgidity recovery of chilled plantlets was verified. During the first 24 hours of cold exposure, no abscisic-acid accumulation was found in leaves and roots. After 30-40 hours, as abscisic-acid development increased, the recovery of turgidity was observed. The data suggest that the adaptation to chilling of bean plants is ruled by the endogenic abscisic acid. The addition of exogenic abscisic acid confirmed the hormone's capability of improving the water state of chilled plants, acting on stoma-closing mechanisms. A.P.
