Summary

In the densely populated areas of the Netherlands, district heating with cogeneration is seen as an important way to reduce the country's high energy demand in winter. A significant drawback with these systems however is that the heat cannot be fully utilized in the summer. In Japan, the need to reduce the sharp growth in electrical demand for air conditioning has lead to increased interest in district cooling systems using absorption chillers. A Dutch delegation had the opportunity to get a close look at Japanese absorption cooling practice and to see if low-temperature cogeneration heat could be used to supply cooling to large buildings in summer.
