Absorption systems: the future, more than a niche?

Summary

An examination of trends and developments in recent years, as well as the early history, provides a context in which the future of absorption refrigeration systems can be projected. The energy infrastructure, national policies, and economics all play a role, with each being dominant in some region of the world. The current state of technology is examined and prospects for new developments are assessed. Two-stage machines have significantly improved COPs. Triple-effect machines are under development. Absorption will continue to be strong and grow rapidly in some areas but remain a niche in some parts of the world.
