Absorption systems: the future, more than a niche?

Summary

The paper traces the development of absorption refrigeration systems from the earliest beginnings in the mid-1700s through its first commercial applications in approximately 1850. Considerable progress has been made in the past twenty years; double-effect machines have significantly improved coefficients of performance and electronic controls have greatly improved reliability and range of operation. Triple effect machines are under development. The position of absorption will continue to be determined by policy, infrastructure, and economics in varying degrees depending on the region considered. Absorption will continue to be strong and grow rapidly in some areas, but remain a niche in some parts of the world.
