Summary

FIRST, the European Space Agency satellite will carry on board a submillimetric detection device using bolometers. The cooling of these bolometers to 300 mK is ensured by an adsorption cryocooler developed at the AEC (Atomic Energy Commission), low-temperature departments. These cryogenic systems use porous material's capacity to store or release gases when they are temperature cycled. By varying the latter, it is possible for example, to condense a liquid and then to lower pressure in order to obtain evaporative cooling. These coolers offer high-performance cycles (over 95%) and may be recycled indefinitely thanks to the use of elementary electronics.
