Summary

After a brief overview of the aims of space cryogenics, the author presents the state of the art of various European satellite and space instruments projects related to cryogenics. He describes the completed programmes (e.g. ISO), as well as those in progress (Intégral, Envisat, or the météostats project ), envisaged programmes (FIRST, Planck) and future programmes (Xeus, Darwin). Then he deals with necessary developments of cryogenic technology in view of future missions.
