Advances on innovative heat exchangers in adsorption heat pumps.

Summary

A heat exchanger with planar geometry, that takes advantage of the difference in pressure between thermal vector fluid and the solid side, in order to maintain good contact between adsorbent bed an metal plate, is proposed in the paper. Its feasibility, both for the adsorbent shape, in tile form, and for the heat exchanger surface was studied. The overall heat transfer coefficient of this device was measured by step response heating tests on a module of the full heat exchanger. Results indicate values of the overall coefficient higher than those obtained for other heat exchanger geometries, allowing more powerful and compact machines.
