Summary

THE INSTALLATION OF THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM AND FIRE PROTECTION CIRCUIT IN THE TRADING FLOOR OF THE SYDNEY EXCHANGE POSED A UNIQUE PROBLEM FOR THE DESIGNERS AS THE TRADING FLOOR HAS AN INTENSE POPULATION DENSITY WITH SOME 900 CLOSELY PACKED PEOPLE OPERATING IN A PLAN AREA OF 720 SQUARE METERS. WITH THE HIGH METABOLIC RATE OF OCCUPANTS AND THE LARGE QUANTITY OF SENSIBLE HEAT DISSIPATED FROM VIDEO SCREENS AND COMPUTER EQUIPMENT, THE DESIGNERS HAD TO PRODUCE AN AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM OF EXTREMELY HIGH QUALITY. THE ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE MEASURES THAT WERE TAKEN TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED. HUMIDIFICATION AND DEHUMIDIFICATION HAD TO BE VERY PRECISELY CONTROLLED IN ORDER TO AVOID CROSS INFECTION FROM OCCUPANTS WHO COULD BE SUFFERING FROM COLDS, INFLUENZA AND OTHER COMMON ILLNESSES.
