Air-conditioning water chiller with variable speed and totally oil-free compressors.

Author(s) : MINEA V.

Summary

The energy performances of a 440-kW air-conditioning factory-assembled water chiller with two totally oil-free, variable-speed compressors are presented. The new water chiller has been designed for an institutional HVAC system with mostly process air-conditioning charges. Several thermodynamic and electrical parameters allowed calculating the non-standard part-load values for summer operation in a cold climate. The results prove that variable-speed compressors with magnetic bearings and digital electronic controls for air-cooled water chillers achieve high energy efficiencies. Compared to the replaced 25-years old water chiller, the part-load efficiency has been improved by 49%, while ensuring similar indoor thermal conditions for process equipment and occupants, and generating less noise.
