Research on energy consumption of variable-frequency chilled water pumps in air-conditioning systems.

Author(s) : WANG H. D.

Summary

Based on the fact that chilled water loop resistance varies with the air-conditioning loads, a general formula of the energy consumption of variable-frequency chilled water pumps in a primary system is obtained. Analysis shows that pump's affinity laws cannot be directly applied to determine the energy consumption of variable-frequency chilled water pumps and the consumed energy is not proportional to the cube of pump speed, but varies with the constant-differential-pressure water-head, air-conditioning loads, capacity distribution characteristics or the locations of air-handling units and the resistance coefficient of the chilled water loop.
