Summary

The applications of CO2 in the refrigeration industry could shortly become an important reality, with the hope that the realization respects the principle of overall reduction (direct but also indirect) of greenhouse gas emissions. From the heat exchanger point of view, limiting oneself to air cooled ones and to the refrigeration sector, there are some problems (greater operating pressures) but also notable opportunities especially in the most difficult design case which is that of the gas coolers. The authors have seen that it may be possible to reduce the ventilation and the frontal area of the coil, at equal energy ratings and with very reduced final DT values (this last being an essential parameter for obtaining a good cycle COP.
