Summary
Aluminium heat exchangers with microchannel tubes have a very high mechanical resistance to the internal pressure and are therefore well suited to the transcritical CO2 gas cooler application. Transcritical CO2-to-air heat exchangers present a very large temperature glide, more than 80 K, which represents a significant potential for the improvement of the heat exchanger thermal efficiency. Generally, CO2 gas coolers do not take advantage of this high temperature glide since 1-row microchannel heat exchangers (parallel flow) are used. Numerical simulations of different heat exchanger configurations, in particular configurations having several rows in the airflow direction (counter-cross flow) were performed by the authors. Advanced numerical modelling of the heat exchanger was performed and due to the large variations in the thermophysical properties of transcritical CO2 along the heat transfer surface, fine numerical discretization is required.
