Air-source heat pumps: criteria for defrost initiation.

Summary

A method for optimized defrost initiation has been evaluated experimentally on two air-source heat pumps. Both the new method and the manufacturer's methods were evaluated at two outdoor air temperatures, 2°C and -7°C. The results show that the method optimizes the efficiency for the given heat pump under given climatic conditions and given energy used for defrosting. The method optimizes one part of the cyclic process of heating and defrosting but the overall optimization has to be handled by an additional criterion.
