Summary

Describes an investigation to determine whether a hygienically significant reduction in airborne particulates and germs is achieved with high air change rates with conventional air introduction systems (turbulent mixing supply), as compared with weakly-turbulent air introduction systems. Concludes from the analysis that for conventional air introduction systems the requirement for high air change rates cannot be justified on the grounds of hygiene. However, high air change rates are required for low-turbulence displacement air flow, where high air flow rates do lead to low germ concentrations in the operating zone.
