Summary

THE GENERAL BEHAVIOUR OF ALTERNATING CURRENT SUSCEPTIBILITY AND ITS DEPENDENCE ON TEMPERATURE, ALTERNATING CURRENT FIELD AMPLITUDE AND FREQUENCY AND DIRECT CURRENT BIAS FIELD IN HIGH TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTORS IS DESCRIBED. THIS BEHAVIOUR IS EXPLAINED BY SUPPOSING THAT THESE SUPERCONDUCTORS CONSIST OF HIGH CRITICAL CURRENT DENSITY AND HIGH MAGNETIC FIELD GRAINS EMBEDDED IN A NORMAL OR POORLY SUPERCONDUCTING MATRIX OR NETWORK THROUGH WHICH SUPERCURRENTS FLOW. KIM'S CRITICAL-STATE MODEL IS FOUND TO BE USEFUL. FOR A SAMPLE WITH RECTANGULAR CROSS SECTION, USEFUL EXPRESSIONS AND TABLES ARE PRESENTED FOR ALTERNATING CURRENT SUSCEPTIBILITY. LOCAL AS WELL AS AVERAGE INTERGRANULAR CRITICAL CURRENT DENSITY CAN BE DETERMINED FROM EXPERIMENTAL ALTERNATING CURRENT SUSCEPTIBILITY DATA.
