THE AUTHOR COMPARES TREATMENT OF COOLING TOWER WATER USING OZONE, ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION AND CHEMICAL BIOCIDES. THE EFFECTS WERE MEASURED BY REGULAR SAMPLING, THE SAMPLES BEING ANALYSED FOR BACTERIA COUNT. CHEMICAL TREATMENT GAVE ERRATIC RESULTS, WHEREAS BOTH OZONE AND UV TREATMENT PRODUCED CONSISTENTLY SAFE LEVELS OF BACTERIA. SOME DIFFICULTIES WERE EXPERIENCED, NOTABLY THE FACT THAT FOR SUCCESSFUL UV STERILIZATION THE WATER MUST BE CLEAR. THIS WAS OBTAINED ONLY AFTER CHANGING THE CORROSION INHIBITOR USED. D.W.H.
