Summary

THE RESULTS OF TESTS PERFORMED ON A RECENTLY DEVELOPED REUSABLE CRYOGENIC SEAL ARE REPORTED. THE SEAL IS FABRICATED ENTIRELY FROM METAL AND USES AN INDIUM ALLOY AS A SEALANT. THE SEAL HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY TESTED AT TEMPERATURES RANGING FROM 1.6 TO 416 K, AND AT PRESSURES IN EXCESS OF 3 MEGAPASCALS. LEAK-TIGHT JOINTS WERE ACHIEVED AT ALL CONDITIONS TESTED, INCLUDING THOSE IN SUPERFLUID HELIUM. TESTS ALSO DEMONSTRATED THE SEAL ABILITY TO WITHSTAND THERMAL CYCLING, BENDING MOMENTS, AND VIBRATION.
