Summary

SOLUTIONS ARE GIVEN FOR FREEZING TIME CALCULATIONS FOR SOME SOLIDS OF SIMPLE GEOMETRY OVER A WIDE RANGE OF FREEZING TEMPERATURES. THE INITIAL SOLUTIONS ARE ANALYTICAL AND THEY ARE FOLLOWED BY FINAL SOLUTIONS FOR SINGLE SOLID SHAPES WHICH ARE DERIVED NUMERICALLY IN A COMPUTER AND THEN ELABORATED GRAPHICALLY IN THE FORM OF NON-DIMENSIONAL CRITERIA. THE RESULTS CAN BE APPLIED DIRECTLY TO THE CALCULATION OF FREEZING TIMES FOR FOOD PRODUCTS AND ALSO FOR THE MELTING AND HARDENING OF METALS. THE NUMERICAL CALCULATIONS CAN BE CARRIED OUT WITH DIGITAL COMPUTERS IN FAIRLY SIMPLIFIED FORM WHICH IS SUITABLE FOR PRACTICAL USES. THE ARTICLE HAS A TABULATED PROGRAMME WORKED OUT FROM A SMALL SIZE DIGITAL COMPUTER.
