Summary

EXPERIMENTS TO DATE HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE THE MAXIMUM HEAT FLUX, AND THE MAXIMUM CAPILLARY PUMPING EFFECT IN HEAT PIPES. THE AUTHORS DESCRIBE IMPROVED APPARATUS TO DETERMINE THESE AND QUOTE THE RESULTS. THE HEAT PIPE TESTED IS OF DOUBLE TUBE CONSTRUCTION WITH THE CAPILLARY WICK IN THE ANNULUS. THE APPARATUS PRODUCES STEAM WHICH CONDENSES ON THE HEAT PIPE PRODUCING A HEAT LOAD. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE MAXIMUM HEAT TRANSFER RATE CAN BE GREATER FOR A CONSTANT WALL TEMPERATURE THAN FOR A CONSTANT WALL HEAT FLUX. THE LATTER IS RESTRICTED BY THE NEED FOR AN EQUAL SUPPLY OF LIQUID TO EVERY PART OF THE TUBE WALL. D.W.H.
