AN ENERGY CONSERVATION EVALUATION OF TWO VARIABLE INTERVAL TIME/TEMPERATURE HEAT PUMP DEFROST CONTROL STRATEGIES.

Author(s) : RETTBERG R. J.

Summary

THE STRATEGIES INCLUDE: OPTIMUM DEMAND DEFROST CONTROL ;THE ACTUAL DEMAND DEFROST CONTROL USED ON THE TESTED HEAT PUMP ; 60 AND 90 MIN FIXED INTERVAL TIME/TEMPERATURE DEFROST CONTROLS ; AND THE TWO VARIABLE INTERVAL TIME/TEMPERATURE (VITT) STRATEGIES. THE SENSITIVITY OF THE RESULTS TO THE MODELS OF THE HEATING LOAD AND THE TEMPERING HEATER CAPACITY ARE ALSO EVALUATED. FOR THE POTENTIAL ENERGY SAVINGS, IT IS ESTIMATED THAT THE BEST OF THE TWO VITT CONCEPTS WILL ACHIEVE LESS THAN 40% OF THE POTENTIAL SAVINGS OF A WEIGHTED AVERAGE, WHEREAS THE ACTUAL DEMAND DEFROST CONTROL WILL ACHIEVE 90% OR MORE OF THE POTENTIAL SAVINGS.
