Summary

THIS PAPER DESCRIBES AN EXPERIMENTAL METHOD TO SEPARATE THE TWO HEAT TRANSFER MECHANISMS IN EVACUATED FIBRE INSULATIONS. THE METHOD USES MEASURED LOCAL THERMAL CONDUCTIVITIES WHICH ARE DETERMINED FROM THE TOTAL HEAT FLOW THROUGH THE INSULATION AND THE TEMPERATURE PROFILE. A REGRESSION ANALYSIS DEMONSTRATES A LINEAR RELATIONSHIP WITH TEMPERATURE OF THE SOLID CONDUCTION PART OF THE TOTAL THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY AND OF THE TOTAL EXTINCTION COEFFICIENT, TO BE A REASONABLE APPROXIMATION.
