Summary
An individually ventilated caging (IVC) system with precisely controlled unidirectional airflow was developed and evaluated relative to bedded polycarbonate cages. Mean ammonia level within the IVC was negligible during the 10-day test period, whereas the ammonia level within the polycarbonate cages ranged from negligible to 30 ppm within five days of cage change. Cage type did not significantly influence cage air temperature, noise level, and the average daily weight gain and plasma corticosterone levels of the rats. The influence of cage population density (recommended vs. double density) in the IVCs was also studied. Average daily weight gain and plasma corticosterone levels of rats were not significantly affected by the cage population density in the IVC. Sensible heat production of laboratory rats in the IVC with four rats was 3.16 watts/rat and that with eight rats was 2.41 watts/rat.
