An optimized procedure for the cryopreservation of Drosophila melanogaster embryos.

Author(s) : STEPONKUS P. L., CALDWELL S.

Type of article: Article

Summary

With the procedure, the authors achieved survival values of 92.9% hatching and 76.6% adult eclosion, with a long-term average of 83.2 more or less 2.2% hatching and 54.0 more or less 5.9% adult eclosion. Thus, about 45% of the embryos stored in liquid nitrogen develop into fertile adults: a survival percentage that warrants consideration of the procedure for practical applications in which long-term maintenance of D. melanogaster embryos is desired.
