Summary

The thermal behaviour of the reversible chemical reaction for the transformation of a solid under the action of a gas, such as calcium chloride-ammonia, constitutes the basis for the design of new refrigerating machines. These can be based on the association of solid-gas reactors (two for ensuring the continuity of the process) with a condenser and an evaporator, but also from the association of solid-gas reactors only, excluding any gas condensed in the process. The analysis and the experimental performance of single or double-effect machines are presented. The main limit to the development of these machines is due to the performance of heat and mass transfers in fixed reaction beds. The development of a reactive block, anisotrope in transfers, whose industrial synthesis is already achieved, makes it possible to reduce considerably the size and cost of such processes.
