Summary

In this study, an experimental set up for the investigation of the local heat transfer coefficient of boiling and condensation in a vertical plate heat exchanger was assembled. The test section, the major component of the experiment, consists of 8 plates and three channels are formed with a passage of the refrigerant flowing in the middle sandwiches between the outer two channels in which the cooling water is flowing through. The experiments were carried out under different mass fluxes ranging from 10 kg m-2 s-1 to 50 kg m-2. The measurement of the local heat transfer coefficient is conducted by the temperature sensors. Although the heat flux can be estimated from temperatures, heat flow in plane directions may give error of estimation. With the aid of simulation, the analysis result shows that the direction of the heat flow from the horizontal direction across the plate tends to deviate downward.
