Summary
The choice of design layout and thermal scheme of microcryocoolers is always depends from a set of technical parameters and requirements for both the machine itself, its operating conditions, and the cooling object. These Include: cooling temperature; cooling capacity; power consumption; thermodynamic efficiency; mass; lifetime; vibration and noise level, electromagnetic interference; performance in a given range of environmental parameters; maintainability; convenience of pairing with a cooling object, and others. The many designs of microcryocoolers for specific cryosystems were presented in literature, and cover different practical applications for cooling and temperature control of various devices, but the criteria for choosing one or another layout scheme are not always clear and obvious, especially from point of required lifetime and MTTF or its prediction.
The paper reviews the layout solutions of microcryocoolers that implement the Stirling, PT, Solvay, Gifford-McMahon, Vuilleumier cycles and their modifications. The purposes of the present analytical review are as follows: to determine the advantages and disadvantages of designs for various applications; provide an assessment of the operation lifetime of individual elements and assemblies based on experimental and computed data presented in open access from commercial companies and researchers. The authors hope that this analysis and drawed up recommendations will allow one at the design stage of a microcryocooler to choose the most suitable kinematic composition, thermal scheme for the given parameters and the required lifetime and MTTF. On the other hand, through detailed analysis of various components' impact the improvement of the existing device’s design is also convenient, by determining the possible ways of refining its thermodynamic characteristics, increasing the operation lifetime to meet the specified technical requirements.
