Antarctica: stirring the icy waters.

Summary

The East Antarctic ice sheet sliding over Lake Vostok may be concealing ancient life in the waters below. Siegert et al. trace radar reflections from internal layers within the ice to reveal how the ice first melts from the base of the ice sheet, then later refreezes to it. This process presumably drives water circulation in the lake, which could be important for any microbial life.
