Summary

This paper deals with an explanation of the principle of cooling capacity modulation with a digital scroll compressor. Capacity modulation was achieved on the mechanical principle, by separating coils from the main body, and control was achieved by PWM (pulse width modulation). The paper describes how, by cooling capacity modulation and by steam injection during the compression process, it is possible to attain the highest, until recently unattainable cooling coefficients and thereby have full possibility of cooling capacity modulation. Scroll compressors with capacity modulation are used with R404A, R407C and R410A, which makes them usable in refrigeration engineering liquid coolers, heat pumps, VRF systems, etc. Particularly with cooling systems with R404A, energy savings were achieved owing to evaporation temperature control within the limits plus or minus 0.5 K (verified by research). Combined with steam injection (which functions even at the time of reduced capacity), this technology offers the highest available energy efficiency at the moment.
