Summary

THE PROCESS OF GROWTH OF THE FREEZING AROUND TWO COOLED PIPES IN CROSSFLOW THROUGH A POROUS MEDIUM IS APPROXIMATELY ANALYZED FROM THE START OF FREEZING TO THE CLOSURE OF TWO FROZEN REGIONS. IN THE PRESENT ANALYSIS THE SHAPES OF THE FROZEN REGION ARE DETERMINED BY THE STREAM FUNCTION OBTAINED FROM COMBINING TWO DOUBLETS AND A UNIFORM FLOW. NON-DIMENSIONAL NUMBERS GOVERNING THE FREEZING PHENOMENON ARE INDUCED FROM THE PRESENT ANALYSIS. IN THE EXPERIMENT OF FREEZING, A PACKED BED OF GLASS BEADS OF MEAN DIAMETER 0. 92 MM WERE USED AS AN EXAMPLE OF A POROUS MEDIUM. THE RATIOS OF THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE PIPE CENTERS TO THE PIPE DIAMETER ARE 2.0 AND 2.5. ANALYTICAL RESULTS OF THE RATE OF GROWTH OF FROZEN REGIONS AND THE TIME REQUIRED FOR CLOSURE OF THE FROZEN REGIONS ARE COMPARED WITH THE RESULTS CALCULATED BY TWO-DIMENSIONAL NUMERICAL ANALYSIS IN THE A. PREVIOUS PAPER AND WITH THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS. IT IS SHOWN THAT THE CHARACTERISTICS OF NED BY THE PRESENT ANALYSIS AND THE RESULTS OBTAINED FROM THE PRESENT ANALYSIS AGREE WELL WITH THE NUMERICAL RESULTS WHEN THE RATE OF GROWTH OF FROZEN REGIONS IS NOT SIGNIFICANTLY LOW. THE CLOSURE TIME IS ARRANGED BY THE NON-DIMENSIONAL NUMBERS INDUCED BY THE PRESENT ANALYSIS.
