SUCCESFUL EXPERIMENTS ON THE FREEZING STORAGE OF BULL SEMEN, AND THE PRODUCTION OF A CALF FROM IT IN JANUARY 1951, WERE CARRIED OUT BY CHRIS POLGE AND ASSOCIATES AT CAMBRIDGE, ENGLAND. THE PROTECTANT FOR THE SPERM WAS GLYCEROL. THE FIRST CALF IN NORTH AMERICA TO BE PRODUCED FROM SEMEN WHICH HAD BEEN FROZEN WAS BORN IN MAY 1953. THE RAPID DEVELOPMENTS IN TECHNIQUES AND STORAGE SINCE THEN ARE DESCRIBED. C.R.F.
