ASPH: Automatic Seaborne Pallet Handling, a hold concept for future reefers.

Author(s) : LEHMANN D.

Summary

The author presents this system, which features a mostly rectangular hold geometry under a closed weatherdeck without hatches; hence, a fully automatic pallet warehouse. This means computer-controlled, completely weather-protected cargo handling, without interruption to the cold chain during transport. The hatchless holds are ideal for controlled-atmosphere operations, in which no personnel enters the hold during loading, unloading and transport. ASPH reefers do not require any harbour peripheral services, because of its own on-board pallet and container gears. They can be used for both newwly built ships and for older tweendeckless vessels (e.g. container ships).
