Side shoring bellows.

Author(s) : KÄLLNER T.

Summary

The article presents this new type of side shoring for reefer vessel carrying cargo either pallets or in bulk. The system is built around a multi-chambered rubber bellows that is fixed to the inside of the ship's sides and is inflated by air. It replaces the traditional side shoring built by wooden laths and is designed to fit the space between the palletized cargo and the sides of the cargo hold. Because the majority of the dead space is filled by the inflated bellows, this volume will not have any air circulation. The cold air obstructed by the bellows is forced through the cargo, resulting in more efficient cooling. The new system gives improved air circulation and therefore more efficient cooling. It gives a better support for palletized cargo, and less damage, easy handling and nearly zero volume loss with bulk loading.
