Summary

The results of a series of control tests on the efficiency of atactic polypropylene as a viscosity improver, in comparison to other additives, polyisobutene (KP 10) and polymethacrylate (PMAV-1 and PMAV-2): viscosity-temperature characteristics of additives solutions in MS-8 lubricants and of hydrocraking lubes, at -25 and -40 deg C, thermogravimetric analysis and thermomechanical stability (ultrasound testing). These results show that this polymer can be used as an additive in oils for motors subjected to heavy thermal and mechanical loads. On this basis, a lubricant for all seasons with a low freezing point was developed. Its base is atactic polypropylene-thickened MS-8 oil, and plant-environment tests have been positive.
