Atmospheric formation of spongy ice.

Author(s) : LIST R.

Summary

Spongy ice, a mixture of ice and water, is produced during the growth of hailstones when the heat and mass transfer is insufficient to freeze all the accreted supercooled cloud droplets. The surplus water is then stored in a growing sponge of ice. The growth of ice into the existing surface water skin may be relevant for the growth of the ice phase in a slurry.
