Author(s) : WOLFF E.
Type of article: Article
Summary
THE AUTHOR RECALLS THE PRINCIPLE OF THE CONVENTIONAL FREEZE-DR YING PROCESS WHERE ICE SUBLIMATION IS CARRIED OUT UNDER VACUUM AND SHOWS THAT THIS PROCEDURE IS MAINLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HIGH PROCESSING COSTS, WHICH LIMIT DEVELOPMENT. HE DESCRIBES THE ANALYSIS WHICH LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ATMOSPHERIC FREEZE-DRYING PROCESS WHERE THE EXTRACTIONOF VAPOUR WATER DURING SUBLIMATION IS BY ADSORPTION. THE PRODUCT TO BE FREEZE-DRIED AND THE ADSORBENT ARE INTIMATELY MIXED IN A FLUIDIZED BED. THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES THE EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT AND ITS OPERATION. HE CITES THE ADVANTAGES ANDLIMITS OF USE AND CONSIDERS POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS. J.R.
