DESCRIBED IS THE DESIGNING OF A HANDLING SYSTEM FOR A COMPANY PROCESSING FROZEN CHIPS AND VEGETABLES, LINKING BULK CHIP PLANT, CHIP PACKAGING, VEGETABLE PACKAGING AND COLD STORES. THE APPROACH INVOLVED DEFINITION OF ACTIVITY LEVELS ETC; ALTERNATIVE METHODS AND LEVELS OF AUTOMATION; SOLUTION OF PRACTICAL PROBLEMS AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE OPTIMUM SCHEME AND VIABILITY ASSESSMENT. THE COMPUTER CONTROLLED SYSTEM USES SIDE LOADING AGV'S TO TRANSPORT CONTAINERS OF PRODUCT, EACH CONTAINER BEING IDENTIFIED BY A BAR CODE DENOTING QUALITY, PRODUCT AND PACK SIZE AND RECORDED BY LASER SCANNERS AT STRATEGIC POINTS TO PROVIDE STOCK CONTROL AND MANAGEMENT INFORMATION.
