Summary

THE CONVENTIONAL METHOD OF EVAPORATOR DESIGN UTILISES THE LOGARITHMIC MEAN TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE AND AN OVERALL HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT CALCULATED FROM INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL COEFFICIENTS. INACCURACIES ARE USUALLY MINIMISED BECAUSE THE FLUID COOLED HAS A LOWER COEFFICIENT THAN A BOILING REFRIGERANT. THE BOILING COEFFICIENT CHANGES CONSIDERABLY WITH THE MODE OF BOILING AND A MORE ACCURATE APPROACH CAN BE MADE USING A CONCEPT OF AVERAGE HEAT FLUX. THIS APPROACH IS DESCRIBED IN DETAIL AND FORMULAE DEVELOPED. D.W.H.
